As teachers in public school autism programs, we have all had students that seem to “dislike” us – some even run the other way when we show up! This situation makes it nearly impossible to teach important skills that they so desperately need to acquire.
We often ask…..
Why is it that many children with autism dislike teachers and teaching environments?
Unfortunately, many children with autism have not yet learned or experienced that interacting with others can be fun or reinforcing.
It’s your job to change that! Before scheduling discrete trial programming, show them that interacting with you can be lots of FUN! It will become much easier to teach them important skills when they are WILLING LEARNERS!
